Mary Joyce Goodwin

Mary Joyce Goodwin, 74, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away Saturday morning, January 21, 2023, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 28, 2023 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Born March 31, 1948, to the late Queenus “John” and Agnes Chaney in Carrolton, Georgia, Mary was known to friends and family as Joyce. Joyce graduated from Griffin High School in 1967 and married her best friend and the love of her life in September 1968.  Joyce and Johnny Goodwin faced life head-on, through good times and bad, through adversity, adventure, and happiness, in health and through sickness, always together as one.  For Johnny, Joyce was an angel disguised as a person and truly perfect.

Joyce became a loving and caring mother in 1979 with the birth of her first son, Jonathan, and again in 1981 with the birth of her second son, Joshua.  The cornerstone of the family and definer of ‘home,’ Joyce was always a source of warmth, love, happiness, and humor.

Other than her parents she is preceded in death by her siblings, Betty Gene Rigsby Blankenship, John Benjamin “JB” Chaney, Curtis Chaney, and Ray Chaney.

Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Johnny Goodwin; her children, Jonathan Goodwin and Joshua and Kari Goodwin; her grandchildren, Orion and Haley Goodwin, Amelia Goodwin, and Sylus Goodwin; her siblings, Esther Chaney, Verna Bailey, and William Chaney; and her loyal dog, Sandy.
