Mary “Evelyn” Cooper, 83, of Columbus, Georgia, died peacefully at her residence, November 14, 2021, surrounded by family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Leila Mae Nelson, siblings Sally (Alfred) Bentley, and Estelle (Glynn) Cooper.

Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Emory Drane Cooper, son David Cooper, granddaughter Christen (Will) Wilbourn, grandson Ryan Cooper, great grandchildren Hailee Anna, Kaden, and Evie Kate Wilbourn, siblings Bertha Barlow, Henry (Loretta) Nelson, Helen (Carl) Dorminey, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Evelyn was born in Stewart County Georgia, and graduated from Chattahoochee County High School. She married her husband, Drane, April 5, 1958. She served as a librarian with the Columbus Library for many years, working at the branch in Chattahoochee County. Her faith was extremely important to her and was a longtime member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia.

She will be remembered for her strength and courage. Throughout her life she overcame numerous medical challenges, to include rheumatic fever as an infant, three cancers and two open heart surgeries. Her love of lighthouses and birds will forever be things her family remembers her by.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 18th, 2021 with Dr. Kevin Calhoun presiding in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Interment will be a private ceremony.
