Mary Lee Wallace
March 24, 1934 — October 17, 2015
Mary Lee Wallace, 81, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at St Francis Hospital. She was surrounded by her family on earth and is now reunited with family and friends in heaven, including her first-born infant son, her parents, and her brother, Everett Cowart.
Mary Lee loved life and enjoyed nothing more than getting together with family and friends, so please join her family to celebrate her life at a visitation Tuesday, October 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a funeral service Wednesday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m., both to be held at McMullen Funeral Home on Gentian Boulevard in Columbus, Georgia, Reverend Jim Hilderbrand officiating.
Mary Lee was born on March 24, 1934 in Hahira, Ga to the late Lillie Hunter Lowe and late Joseph Cowart. Raised to believe education and hard work were the keys to success, she graduated high school and became one of the first members of her family to attend college. She received a Bachelor's degree from Berry College in Rome, Ga and went on to teach 33 years for Muscogee County School District. Mary Lee loved her kids and taught Kindergarten and 1st grade in several schools, including Eastway, Wesley Heights, Tillinghurst, and St Elmo.
Upon retirement, she became a staple at Peachtree Mall, where she enjoyed daily walks, food and fellowship. As her health diminished, she was forced to give up the walks, but still met with her dear friend of 50 plus years, Sara Parker, and their "Chick Fil A Club" at the mall for lunch and her favorite sport "people watching." She was an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church and especially loved Edgewood's Joy Sunday School Class.
Her biggest passion was her family and she eagerly anticipated her weekly luncheons at Ryan's, phone call updates and surprise drop-in visits. Mary Lee took great joy in bargain-hunting and frequently surprised family members with her year-round Christmas shopping.
She is survived by three children from her marriage to John H. Wallace, Sr.: daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Steve Stone of Columbus, GA and sons and daughters-in-law, John and Mary Wallace of Lawrence, KS, and Mike and Kelly Wallace of Salem, AL. Mary Lee is also survived by four grandchildren: Taylor, Lindsay, Lauren and Lance; four honorary grandchildren, Richard, Jonathan, Taylor and Jordan; two great-grandchildren, Colton and Ashton; niece and nephews, Jeanne Law, Scott Wallace, Don Wallace, and Donald Cowart; and brother/sister-in-law Glenn and Kay Wallace.
