Raised by her late parents, Jesse Shields Brewer and Victoria Elizabeth Sherman Brewer, Mary Lou spent her early years in the warm embrace of her family. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Philip Lee Brewer of Columbus, Ga. As a mother, she was blessed with three children: Paul Leonard DeMent, Jr. (deceased), Genevieve DeMent Williamson, and John Philip DeMent. She also opened her heart and home to a foster son, William Lee Tucker. Her loving spirit extended to her grandchildren, Cameron Martine Reid and Bonnie MacKenzie Reid, as well as her foster grandsons, William LeBrandon Dion Morris and Joshua Demarcus Tucker.
Mary Lou, Mom, GrannyMent, Mama, or whatever name you called her, her life was a testament to the power of love, as evidenced by the countless lives she touched, and the many memories shared with those who had the privilege to know her.
Mary Lou's passion for education led her to earn a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and a master’s degree from Columbus State University. She then shared her knowledge and enthusiasm as a substitute teacher for the Muscogee County School System. In the classroom, Mary Lou was known for her wit and humor, inspiring young minds while leaving them in stitches.
Mary Lou found joy in exploring new places and making unforgettable memories with her loved ones. She enjoyed traveling, camping, and hiking, often accompanied by a motley crew of friends and family members.
An avid animal lover, Mary Lou provided a loving home to many furry friends throughout her life. Her compassion for all creatures, great and small, was a testament to her kind and gentle spirit. She found solace and joy in the company of her pets and believed that every animal deserved a loving home.
Mary Lou loved to share joy and laughter. In the words of the immortal Phyllis Diller, "Housework can't kill you, but why take a chance?"
As we gather to celebrate the life of our dear Mary Lou, let us remember the many blessings she brought to our lives. Her laughter, her love, and her generosity of spirit will remain with us always. And as we bid her a fond farewell, let us take comfort in the knowledge that she now rests in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father, reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her.
Mary Lou, you are gone from this Earth, but you will never be forgotten. Your spirit lives on in the hearts of your family and friends, and your memory will be cherished for generations to come. May you rest in peace, dear sister, until we meet again in that glorious place where there is no more pain, no more tears, and no more goodbyes.
“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands” Deuteronomy 7:9
