Martha Louise Ward, 88, of Columbus, died Sunday afternoon, December 5, 2010, at home with her family.


Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Thursday, December 9, 2010 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Helen Berenthien officiating. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 till 8 P.M. at the funeral home.


She was one of two children born to the late Frank Olin and Annie Mae Lumpkin, August 13,1922, in Fortson, Georgia. Louise graduated from Jordan High School in 1938. She was married to the late William Wallace Ward Jr. in 1942. Bill and Louise lived in Columbus most of their lives, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 1992.


Louise enjoyed many years working in the fields of book keeping and accounting in Columbus until she retired in October of 1987. She was a member of St. Luke Methodist Church and enjoyed years of active membership in Circle 2 of United Methodist Women. One of her many hobbies that she loved was gardening. As a member of the Winchester Garden Club, she served as president and in many other capacities.


Louise is survived by her daughters, Sheila Ward and Dianne Ward Bonham, son-in-law John Bonham, and granddaughter, Jessie Bonham. In the last several years of her life, she enjoyed a warm, wonderful home with Dianne, John and Jessie. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Ann Ward McCauley of Atlanta, Georgia, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Herman F. Lumpkin, sister-in-law Evelyn Lumpkin and nephew Herman F Lumpkin Jr.


She was one of the sweetest, most gracious ladies anyone would have the privilege to know, always thinking of others before herself. She will be missed and loved.
