Marjorie Lorene Haddock Richardson, 86, of Columbus, GA, died after an extended illness on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 18, 2010, at St. Luke United Methodist Church 1104 2nd Ave. Columbus, GA 31901 with interment at Parkhill Cemetery. Dr. Hal Brady, Reverend Emory Gilbert, and Reverend Helen Berenthien will officiate. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Jesus is Lord Sunday School Class. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2010 at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mrs. Richardson was born January 30, 1924, in Columbus, Georgia, the only child of Jesse Stovall and Lorene Cosper Haddock. She was educated in the public schools in Columbus, Georgia. She graduated with honors from Columbus High School where she served as vice president of the senior class and was named the most representative member of the National Honor Society. She was also a graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, where she received a degree in education.
Following her graduation from Agnes Scott, she pursued a career in education and went on to teach at Waverly Terrace School, Columbus Junior High, and Arnold Junior High. She was known as a strict but fair teacher and many of her students still ask about her when they run into a family member. She shared a gift with her students that few have and made an indelible impression upon them. During her teaching career she was elected vice president of the Delta Kappa Gamma teachers professional fraternity and was also sent as a representative of Arnold Junior High to a conference on social education in public schools held in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.
She married the love of her life, John Walter Richardson, Jr., on December 20, 1946, at her parentâ
