Marie Colston Kemp Lewis, age 84, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Columbus Hospice House.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 9:30 AM Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Frank Patterson officiating. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. A rosary will be said 6:00 PM Friday evening with visitation to follow at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mrs. Lewis was born June 20, 1927 in Rochester, NY daughter of the late COL Charles William Colston, Sr. and Victoria Heilman Colston.
She was a 1945 graduate of Columbus High School, attended the University of Alabama, Furman University and graduated from Columbus State University in 1979. She worked in the family furniture business for many years and for the Georgia Department of Family & Children Services. She was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Daughter's of US Army, Ladies Auxiliary of MOAA, Past President of QUOTA Club of Columbus, Azalea Garden Club, Past President of Columbus Council of Garden Clubs, Past President of Springer Opera House Guild. She was recognized as a Gracious Lady of Georgia, a recipient of the Emily Woodruff Award and a volunteer at the Anne Elizabeth Shepard Home.
She was also recognized as Outstanding Commissioner of Keep Columbus Beautiful in 2006.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Gene Austin Kemp, Sr. and John Allen Lewis, Jr. and brother, Charles William Colston, Jr.
Survivors include her children, Gene Austin Kemp, Jr. (Debby), Bruce C. Kemp (Mary), Robert D. Kemp (Janet) and Barbara Kemp Moushon (Brian) all of Columbus, GA, step-children, Roger Allen Lewis,(Kim) of Granbury, TX and Susan Lewis McManus (Peter) of Apex, NC, grandchildren, Mary Allison Kemp, Martha Schley Kemp, Robert Colston Kemp and Victoria Anne Marie Moushon, and step-grandson, Curtis Allen Lewis.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be sent to the Shepard Home in Columbus or the Literacy Alliance of Columbus.
