Margo Lee Keaton Leatherland, age 79, has gone on to visit the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, November 28, 2019. She left this earth from her final stay at Columbus Hospice in Columbus, GA after a 10-year fight with Parkinson's disease.
A small memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Derrick Millirons officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
She was born September 14, 1940 in Richmond, VA to Leon S. and Margaret Shriver Keaton. They built their family in Oneida, TN before a tragic accident took the reduced family unit to Miami, FL in 1950. She graduated from Coral Gables High School in Miami, FL in 1958. Margo married Theodore "Ted" W. Leatherland in 1958 in Miami.
Margo is survived by her two sons, Terry W. Leatherland and his wife, Nancy Phillips Leatherland of Sugar Land, TX and Jay W. Leatherland of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Terra Leatherland of Dallas, TX and Jayson Leatherland of Columbus, GA, three step-grandchildren in TX, Nicole Ponce, Michelle Dela Homme in Sugar Land/Houston and Dr. Renae Dela Homme in Stillwater, OK. Renae and Nicole have new sons respectively, Luke Daniel Mauzerall and Noah Leonardo Ponce. Margo is also survived by nieces Danielle Thew, Samantha Mimna and Jenny Crook, sister-in-law, Zukie Smith of Huntsville, AL, Amy Patterson of FL, Colleen of Murphy, TN and Katie Person of Palm Beach, FL, great-nieces and nephews, Blake, Kross, John Paul, Zoe and Suzanna Thew, Josiah Mimna, Hendrix, Patterson, Cody Person, and Colleen's sons, brother, Leon S. "Buddy" Keaton, Jr. (Sharon) of Murphy, TN.
Terry graduated from Phenix City Central High School in 1977 and the University of Alabama in 1982. Jay graduated from Ole Mill High School in Glen Burnie, MD in 1980, later relocating back to Columbus, ultimately retiring from the Columbus Fire Department as a Captain in 2016. Terry lives in Sugar Land, TX working as an executive for IBM Corporation.
During the boys high school days, Margo served for several years as an Administrative Assistant at Spencer High School in Columbus. Later, she moved to Glen Burnie, MD and ultimately retired from 20+ years as an Executive Assistant at Northrup Grumman Corporation. After retirement from Grumman, she relocated back to Columbus. For the last 10+ years of her life she fought off Parkinson's disease until succumbing on November 28, 2019. Today, she is with the Lord.
Margo led a life of firm belief in the Lord Jesus Christ and was a helping hand to all that she encountered. She raised her two sons to be giving people. Jay, serving in the Fire Department, and Terry serving in Missions for his church in Houston.
