Marcus Don Tillis acquired perpetual rest Thursday, May 20, 2021 in the comfort of his Columbus home with his wife and two daughters by his side. He was a committed and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Many affectionately knew Marcus as “Marky”.
Funeral services with military honors will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 28, 2021 in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Chaplain Damion Harper officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Interment will be held 12:30 PM Friday following the service at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery.
Marcus was born September 22, 1966 in Pacoima, CA to Essie Ivy and Lendon B. Tillis. He fell in love in 2002 and was joined in holy matrimony to his dear wife of 16 years, Shirley, in Phoenix, AZ on October 1, 2005.
He leaves to cherish his memory a kindhearted caring and compassionate wife, Shirley, 7 children; 3 sons; Marcus Dontae, Sterling Marselis and Peter, and 4 daughters; Essence Marshe Janae, Saige Monet, Maria Theresa and Alycia Rose. He also departs from 11 grandchildren, 9 siblings and a multitude of beloved cousins, nephews and nieces that will have a lifetime of memories.
Marcus graduated high school and continued on to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army where his boots touched the ground in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
After being honorably discharged, he became a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served 3 terms as the Chaplain at the VFW Post 9400 in Sunnyslope, AZ and was also very active with the VFW Cooties by visiting hospitalized veterans to raise their spirits. Marcus relocated to Georgia to settle down where he served an additional term as Chaplain at the VFW Post 10558 in Cataula, GA. Helping other veterans is what he loved to do.
Marcus will be authentically missed by so many people whose lives he touched whether a leader, mentor, friend, uncle, brother, father, grandfather or simply another veteran. He was a man of many talents and was always up for an intellectual challenge. His character brought out the many gifts he had to offer.
