Luther Eugene Duke, Sr., 86, of Columbus, GA died Thursday, February 23, 2012 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, February 25, 2012 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Buddy Lamb officiating. A private interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Duke was born February 20, 1926 in Newton County, GA son of the late William T. and Irene Duke. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked as a quality control specialist for the U.S. Government. He was a member of Schomburg Rd. Baptist Church, American Legion, NARFE, and AARP. He also was an avid square dancer.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Owenby Hinesley Duke, daughter, Martha Alice Duke, brothers, Otis, William, James and Charles Duke, and his sisters, Frances McClure and Bobby Jean McGibboney.
Survivors include his daughter, Jennie Sawyer (Steve) of Conyers, GA, son, Luther Duke, Jr. (Alice) of Macon, GA, stepchildren, Mike Hinesley (Dina) of Columbus, GA, Marsha Tobey (Martin) of Columbus, GA and Vicki Strickland (Larry) of Columbus, GA, sisters-in-law, Gladys Duke of Atlanta, GA, Frances Duke of Covington, GA and Louise Duke of Gainesville, GA, brother-in-law, Floyd McGibboney of Covington, GA, first wife and mother of his children, Winkie S. Duke Green of Milledgeville, GA, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, special friend, Willie Pearl Ellis of Columbus, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
