LTC (Ret.) Richard Michael Szabo, 79, of Midland, Georgia died Monday, June 26, 2017, at his home.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M, Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, Georgia 31907 during which the family will receive friends. The visitation will be followed by Chapel Service at 1:00 P.M with full military honors.
Richard was born July 8, 1937 in Passaic, New Jersey, son of the late Joseph Szabo and Mary Kress Szabo and husband of Mrs. Frances Szabo. He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1959 and then was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry, U.S. Army the following year. He served two tours of combat during the Vietnam War and retired after 22 years of service. He continued serving as a member of the Georgia Department of Corrections for over 10 years retiring as a Warden at Rutledge Correctional Facility here in Columbus, Georgia. His service to the community ended with teaching and training others at Columbus State University in the field of criminal justice.
The rest of his time was spent enjoying retirement as a loving father and doting grandfather.
Other than his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Marie Szabo and his brother, Joseph Szabo.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Frances Corallo Szabo of Midland, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Kenneth Ward of Midland, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Szabo of Columbus, Georgia; son, Robert Szabo of Columbus, Georgia; granddaughters, Rachel and Kendel Ward of Midland, Georgia; Marybeth Kokora of Clifton, New Jersey; Dennis Szabo of Manchestor, New Jersey; Patricia Strobel of Columbus, Georgia.
The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The American Heart Association 7167 Mobley Walk Dr. Columbus, GA 31904.
