John Stonie Patterson, Sr., Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, Retired, of Richland, GA, died at 80, Saturday, July 15, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, Georgia.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Living Grace United Methodist Church, 3969 Edgewood Circle, Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Roy White officiating. Internment with Full Military Honors will be held at Harmony Cemetery, Richland, GA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
(Ret.) LTC Patterson was born November 2, 1936 in Renfroe, GA, son of the late Robert Eli Patterson and Juliette Van Horn Patterson.
He graduated from North Georgia College in 1959.
He served for 28 years in the United States Army from July 31, 1959 until April 1, 1988.
His assignments included Ft Rucker, Alabama, Ft Benning, Georgia, Korea, Ft Campbell, Kentucky, Ft Riley, Kansas, Vietnam, and Germany. He graduated from Command and General Staff College in 1977. Among his many awards he received the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with V device (for bravery in combat), the Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Master Aviator Badge, and the Parachutist Badge. He was recognized for having over 4,800 accident free flying hours.
LTC Patterson, a successful fisherman, loved (and was obsessed) to fish with his son, Stonie Jr, daughter, Vonda and his best friends Doyle Campbell and Harry Ligon.
He attended Living Grace United Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Pam Greer Patterson of Richland, GA; daughter, Vonda Patterson, Huntsville, AL; son, John Stonie Patterson, Jr. (Kristie) of Smiths Station, AL; sister, Fredonia Templin of Richland, GA; brothers, COL (Ret) Robert Eli Patterson (Betty), Richland, GA and Capt (US Navy) (Ret) William Van Horn Patterson (Kathy) of Columbus, GA; 2 grandchildren, Annsley and Adley Patterson of Smiths Station, AL and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.
