LTC Thomas James O'Brien (Ret.), 87, of Columbus, GA passed away Monday, August 15, 2016 at Midtown Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM EST Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell, AL with long time friends Jack Jones and Charlie Bradford eulogizing. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
LTC O'Brien was born May 12, 1929 in Watertown, Jefferson City, WI son of the late Harry and Louise Koenig O'Brien. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army after 20 years of meritorious service and having served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. In retirement, LTC O'Brien continued pursuit of his passions as an avid Outdoorsman, Master Turkey Hunter and Trout Fisherman as well as being a loving husband and father to his family and a staunch supporter of the military services and many outdoor and conservation initiatives. He was also a Baptist by faith.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jackie Short O'Brien of Columbus, GA, sons, Michael Thomas O'Brien (Yolanda) and LaDon Keith Cato, daughters, Kimberly Englebert (Scott) and Marianne Cato, sisters, Nancy Strobel (Dick) and Barbara Yelle, brother, Billy O'Brien, grandchildren, Valerie Proia (David), Amanda Opliger (David), Steven Lee Steinruck, Jasmine Englebert, Lindsay Griffith, Dakota Griffith, Chloe Englebert and Hunter Beehler, special great grandchildren, Arianna Anderson, Skylar Anderson, Noah Opliger, Tyson Hill, Annisten Steinruck, and Jacob ("Jake") Kay.
