LTC (Ret.) Louis "Lou" H. Marcotte of Columbus, GA passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was 84.
Lou was born on November 28, 1931 in Moreauville, LA, the son of the late Wilford Anatole "Tall" Marcotte and Octavia Coco Marcotte. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother - Raymond - and two sisters - Gloria and Meredith.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jacqueline "Jackie" Marcotte; three daughters, Susan Martin of Columbus, GA, Martha Edwards of Crawfordville, FL and Linda O'Brien Riggs (Mike Riggs) of Chattanooga, TN; and son, Louis "Lou" H. Marcotte, Jr. (Patricia) of Atlanta, GA. Lou is also survived by his five grandchildren - who lovingly called him "Pappy" - including 1st grandchild, Jeannice Hall (who was raised by Lou and Jackie), Joseph Marcotte, Robert Marcotte, Alyson Martin and Stephen O'Brien, and numerous nieces and nephews - who affectionately referred to him as "Uncle Weech" - and other family members.
As a young man, Lou left Moreauville to become a page in the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. and later joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. During this time, he met the love of his life - Jackie - in Fort Ord, California and began a life of adventure that included travels around the world. After 30 years of decorated service in the U.S. Army - including serving in combat in Cambodia and Vietnam - Lou retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from Fort Benning and later retired after nearly 20 years as President of the Better Business Bureau of West Georgia and East Alabama.
Always one to proudly discuss his military service, Lou was an active member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the Military Order of World Wars (MOWW).
He was also a member of St. Anne Catholic Church where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Green Island Country Club and the Hackers golf group.
Lou was gifted with the art of the one-liner. He often delivered spontaneous responses to everyday conversation that were repeated with relish. Most importantly, Lou will be remembered as a man who truly loved life, his family and was blessed with the ability to "never meet a stranger."
