Lonnie Thomas Whitehurst, 79, born November 15, 1933 to Fannie Carpenter Whitehurst and Jessie R. Whitehurst, Sr., and a lifetime resident of Columbus, passed away March 19, 2013, after an almost year-long battle with cancer. Lonnie is preceded in death by his siblings Jessie R. Whitehurst Jr., John Hamilton Dukes, Lewis Madison Whitehurst, Sr., and Olive Jewel Whitehurst.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 22, 2013, at Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Hagan officiating. A private interment will be held in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the church, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.
Lonnie married Mary Annette (Anne) Barden on August 29, 1954 and settled briefly in Panama City, FL where he served 2 years in the United States Navy before returning to Columbus.
Lonnie was employed by Royal Crown Cola from 1950-1997. He progressed from route helper to route sales, sales supervisor, Assistant Sales Manager, Sales Manager, and ultimately Safety Director. In his free time, Lonnie enjoyed camping, softball, fishing, travel, woodworking, eating peanuts and gardening. He walked through life with a smile and a kind word, relishing everything he did and meeting each new acquaintance as a friend.
A man of great faith, Lonnie was a Charter Member of Epworth United Methodist Church from 1960 until 2013, Methodist Man of the Year for Epworth Methodist and lifetime member of the United Methodist Men. He served in various capacities for the church, including member of the Board of Trustees, Council on Ministries, cook, teacher of 5th and 6th grades, and bicycle ministry.
Lonnie was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his wife Anne of 58 years and children Laurie Whitehurst Glenn of Athens, AL (Bob), and Denny Whitehurst of Columbus GA, as well as grandchildren Lisa Glenn of Phoenix, AZ, Katie Glenn of Birmingham, AL, Carl Glenn of Springfield, MO, Charlie Whitehurst of Birmingham, AL, and Cody Whitehurst of Birmingham, AL, and brother Jimmy Lee (Bettie) Whitehurst of Atoka, TN, as well as innumerable friends.
