Lois Wellborn Atkins, 83, of Columbus, GA passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014, at her home.
Ms. Atkins was born March 16, 1931 in Atlanta, GA to the late Raymond Nesbert Wellborn and Floride Gertrude Wellborn. She graduated from Brown High in Atlanta in 1949 and earned a fine arts degree from the University of Georgia. She worked during the 50's at the WSB radio station in Atlanta. After moving to Columbus in 1974, she completed an Ed.S. at Columbus State, and taught special education at New Mountain Hill Elementary in Harris County until her retirement in 1996. Lois attended the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and was a member of the Columbus Artists' Guild and the Muscogee Genealogical Society.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Wellborn, of Atlanta, and her sister, Jeannette Morgan, of Powder Springs, GA.
Survivors include her daughters, Dr. Lindsey Atkins and Kimberly King, and Laurie Atkins, her ex-husband, Dr. James T. Atkins, and her brother, the Rev. N. Earl Wellborn, all of Columbus, GA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbus, at P.O. Box 698, Fortson, GA, 31808.
