Lewis Clyde Huckaby was born in Chattahoochee County around Cusseta Georgia on September 8, 1926. He grew up on a farm in rural Georgia, with an unexpected death of his father he took over many of the family responsibilities. Lew’s tenacity, care and love insured family stability for his mother and two sisters during these very tough times during the depression.
A graveside service will be held at Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 24, 2025 according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory.
Upon high school graduation Lew enlisted in the Army in 1945; after completing his basic training he returned to marry the love of his life Anne Edwards. For almost 24 years he served our nation with honor and valor. Sargent Huckaby’s outstanding initiative, true grit and sharp leadership did not go unnoticed, he received a commission as a Second Lieutenant and served as an artillery officer, he arose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. LT COL Huckaby is truly an American hero, serving in three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the elite 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, this team was proud among paratroopers for glory won in combat and garrison and feared by our enemy. As a decorated soldier LT COL Huckaby is a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart from injuries received in combat. He was also presented the Legion of Merit for outstanding service and his many contributions for our nation. LT COL left the Army to take care of his ill wife, he provided passion, love and care until she passed away. He found new love with his beloved “Bev” until his passing in 2017.
Lew was always ready to help those in need providing his knowledge, guidance and compassionate support whenever and whomever heeded it. When called upon he was always there to pitch in and help. As an active member of the Columbus Exchange Club his inspiring leadership, knowledge and support helped create camaraderie and fellowship among club members. He spearheaded many events and activities that directly impacted the local community by providing support to those in need in Columbus and surrounding areas.
Lew loved to go fishing and would go whenever he could get away. As an advocate fisherman he spent many hours drifting along the Chattahoochee River enjoying its beauty and many fishing spots. He enjoyed taking and teaching others on how to enjoy the sport of fishing. Today we aren’t saying goodbye, but saying we love you and will see you later. Hope you catch a big one, but don’t catch them all so we can go fishing when we see you again.
He is survived by his children and their families, including Phillip Lewis Huckaby (deceased) Daughter-n-Law Guyette Huckaby, Grandson Brandon Huckaby (Jennifer) Great-Grandaughter Lilly Huckaby, Son Stephen Clyde Huckaby, Daughter-n-Law Linda Huckaby, Grandaughter Nicole Katherine Huckaby. Daughter Kathy Anne Hickman, Son-n-Law James Steven Hickman and Grandson Adam Connor Hickman
He is also survived by his Step-Son and their families, including, Step-Son Christopher Allen Johns (deceased), Daughter-n-Law Darla Johns, Step-Grandson Christopher Johns II (Brittany), Step-Grandson Michael Johns, Step-Grandaughter Shelbie Hill (Derek). 6 Step-Great Grandchildren Rylea, Ryder and Ryan Hill, Caydence and Jerri Leigh Johns and Paizlea Johns.
