Lex Paige McClellan, 86, died Tuesday evening, March 15, 2011 at his home in Columbus, Georgia after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2011 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Howard White officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City, AL. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. McClellan was born August 28, 1924 in Geneva County, AL to Arthur Ebeneezer and Fannie Moseley McClellan. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II as a Hospital Corpsman on-board the USS Repose, a Hospital Ship in the Pacific Ocean. He retired after 32 years of service as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman (E9). Lex and the love of his life, LaVerne, recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. In 1952, Lex and his brother, Arthur Junior McClellan, established Lakeview Memory Gardens Perpetual Care Cemetery, a business he owned and managed successfully until retiring from that business in 1967. He then worked as a Civil Servant at Fort Benning, Georgia until retiring from that job. He later was Manager of Hidden Lake Condominiums for several years and was still active as Bookkeeper of Hidden Lake.

Lex could accomplish anything he set his mind to. As a recruiter in the Naval Reserve, he was Recruiter of the Year numerous times. Lex was a loving husband and good father. He was an avid runner, competing in several mini-marathons; a lifetime member of the Columbus YMCA Health Club, attending five times a week until recent health issues slowed him; bowled a high game of 277 at Victory Lanes in Columbus; received a 4 year degree from Columbus State University at an advanced age; and until just recently was active as guitarist and singer for a blue grass and gospel group that played regularly at nursing homes and the Valley Rescue Mission.
