Leon Elmon Barnes

Leon Elmon Barnes, 88, of Buena Vista, GA, died Wednesday, December 13, 2023 with his loving family by his side.

Funeral services will be held 1:00PM Tuesday December 19, 2023 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Ed Rollins officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the funeral home, McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery following the services.

Leon was born June 12, 1935 in Enterprise, AL to the late Leon Fred Barnes and Flora Bell Adkinson Barnes. He retired as a supervisor from Swift Textile and Fieldcrest Mills after many years of service. He was best known for the love he had for his family and friends. He cherished every moment spent with them and could tell tales that would keep you on the edge of your seat. Leon owned and operated a penny gum vending company for many years. As a young man his life was spent on the family farm where he worked and became the step-father to every animal that ventured onto the farm. His love for animals of all kinds began from the day he was born until the day he died, never wavering from the love and care he provided to each and every one of them.

Other than his parents his is preceded in death by the love of his life for 68 years, his wife, Sarah Dean Barnes, daughter, Myra Wood, grandchildren, Rebecca Barnes, Bradlee Barnes, great granddaughter, Savannah Wood, brothers, Colin, Jerry, James Barnes and sister, Deborah Barnes.

He is survived by his sons, Tim Barnes (Cindy) of Palmetto, GA, Jeffrey Barnes (Lisa) of Buena Vista, GA, grandchildren, Christine Teate (Samuel) of Mauk, GA, Matthew Wood (Brandy) of Columbus, GA, Jeffrey Barnes, Jr. of Columbus, GA, great grandchildren, Ashley Roberson (Caleb), Amberlynn Hernandez, Noah Miller, Jasper Wood and Peyton Wood.
