SSG Rt. Lawrence Ira French, Sr. 90 of Columbus died Thursday September 24, 2009 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 27, 2009 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Barksdale officiating. A private interment will be held in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the services at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
Mr. French was born September 30, 1918 in Pontotoc, MS son of the late George and Bessie Dodson French. He retired from the U.S. Army on April 20, 1971 after serving three Wars. Mr. French was recognized for his military service, receiving the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal four times, The Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze star, World War II Victory Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960) and various marksman awards. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and had served as a custodian with his wife, Anna M. French of 47 years.
Survivors include his wife Anna Mia Reese French of Columbus, GA;
two sons Larry W. French (Donna) of Fortson, GA and Lawrence Ira French, Jr. (Carol) of Lancaster, PA; nine cousins Nellie Davidson of Columbus, GA, Doris Ivey of Kennett, MO Francis Williams of Kennett, MO Terry Weeks, Sherald Weeks, and Phil Weeks all of Pontotoc, MS Steve Weeks of Jackson, MS Lucille Bray of Houston, MS and Billie Greer of Macon, GA.
