Lawrence P. (Ret.) Fulton

LTC (Ret.) Lawrence P. "Larry" Fulton, Jr., 79, of Cataula, GA died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at his residence.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held 1:00 PM Monday, June 24, 2013 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Howard White officiating. Interment will follow to Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
LTC (Ret.) Fulton was born June 23, 1933 in Gulf Port, MS son of the late Lawrence P. and Annie Lou Gray Fulton. He graduated in 1951 from Gulf Port High School. He graduated from Louisiana State University majoring in Business Administration and he enrolled in ROTC and commissioned a 2LT in the U.S. Army Reserve, field artillery in August 1956. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel having served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He entered active duty in the U.S. Army on September 15, 1956. He attended the Artillery Officers basic course at Ft. Sill, OK from September 15, 1956 until December 15, 1956.
He was assigned to the 52D field artillery battalion 24th infantry division and motor battery 5th cavalry 1st infantry division 8th US Army, Korea in January 1957 to April 1958. He returned to the United States in 1958 and assigned to the United States Army training center in Ft. Chaffee, AR. There he served as infantry tactics instructor, artillery battery executive officer and artillery training battery commander until July 1959.
Upon the closure of Ft. Chaffee, he moved to Ft. Sill, OK with the field artillery training command and served as battery commander of battery C 4th training battalion July 1959 until January 1961. He assumed the command of the 25th missile detachment in January 1961. He then deployed with the detachment to USAREUR in April of 1961 and was assigned to the 552D artillery group and located in Walsrode, Germany. He then reassigned to the 552D artillery group headquarters in February 1963 and served as S4 officer on the group staff. He returned to the United States in April 1964 and attended the field artillery officers advance course at Ft. Sill, OK until January 1965.
He deployed to Vietnam in September 1965 with 2D battalion 13th field artillery. He was then reassigned to 23D artillery group in June 1966 and served as the Liaison Officer to the Headquarters of the 1st infantry division, army of the republic of Vietnam.
He returned to the United States in October 1966 and was assigned to 3D training battalion U.S. Army training center, field artillery in Ft. Sill, OK as executive officer.
In August of 1967, he was reassigned to Ft. Leavenworth, KS to attend the command and general staff college. In June of 1968, he completed the command and general staff course and was reassigned as author instructor in the department of division operation at the college. He then was transferred to USAREUR in August 1971, and assigned to the 8th infantry division artillery as S3 operations officer in Baumholder, Germany. He served as the support activity commander and director of industrial operations in Baumholder from July 1973 until August 1975. He then retired from Ft. Monroe in April 30, 1978.
During his military career, he received many awards, medals, and badges that include; meritorious service medal, army commendation medal, national defense service medal, Vietnam service medal with 3 bronze stars, Vietnam campaign medal with 60 device, Vietnam cross of gallantry with palm unit, Vietnam civil action unit citation, and meritorious unit citation.
He later retired as a manager of Direct Insurance in Columbus, GA. He was a member of Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church, Home Builder Group, and the MOAA.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nelle.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Elfriede "Fritzie" Fulton of Cataula, GA, daughter, Rachel Delisle (Matt) of Anchorage, AK, two sisters, Edith Whitney of Dallas, TX and Sylvia "Chibby" Busey of Shreveport, LA, and brother, Walter R. Fulton of Spanish Fort, AL.
