Kilby Lawson "Kirk" Kirkland, Jr., 64 of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital.
Graveside services will be held 11 A.M., Monday, March 14, 2011 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3 till 5 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.
Mr. Kirkland was born November 1, 1946 in Marianna, FL to the late Kilby Lawson Kirkland, Sr. and Mozelle Ryals Kirkland-Olive. Kirk was a graduate of Ashford High School and received his BA Degree in English and History from Samford University and later his Master's Degree in Education from Columbus State University. He volunteered with the Ms. Georgia Pageant Board, with the Buick Open Golf Championship and with Riverfest. Kirk was the President of the Columbus State University Alumni Association. He proudly served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Sandra Dees Kirkland of Columbus, GA, daughter, Jessica Kirkland of Columbus, GA, brother, Foster Kirkland (Linda) of Daphne, AL, sisters, Wanda Kirkland of Webb, AL, Carol Wilisch (Alex) of Yukon, OK, grandchildren, Taylor Lavender and Cody Kirkland, niece, Kristine Simpkins, and nephew, Scott Drinkwater.
