Katherine “Kathy” DeLay Davis Mewbourne passed in the comfort of her home surrounded by loved ones on November 23, 2024 in Hamilton, Ga.
A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM Sunday, December 1, 2024 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA.
Kathy was born December 6, 1947 to John W. and Vivian Hawkins Davis of Summerville, Georgia. She was a lifelong teacher of math and computer science with many years spent at Columbus Technical College. Her enthusiasm for math was infectious. She had a special gift in her ability to teach math to anyone with a desire to learn. She retired in 2005 as Division Chair of the Computer Information Sciences Department. She later returned to serve part-time as a math tutor. She worked until the week before her passing.
Kathy graduated from University of Georgia in 1970. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Philonian Study Group. She enjoyed playing bridge and attended a variety of book clubs. She was also a pen pal for girls at the Ann Elizabeth Shepherd home.
She adored being “Mimi” to her grandkids who knew her as a constant source of fun, humor and friendship. During her downtime, she loved spending time with her dog, Sanford while playing games on her iPad.
She was a beautiful blend of unassuming brilliance and playfulness. She had a quick wit while showing kindness and acceptance to all. We will be forever grateful for her influence in all of our lives.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lloyd Robert Mewbourne, Jr, daughters Melanie Garland (Geoffrey) and Sandy Jowers, grandchildren, Courtlyn, James, Beau and Victoria. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Adams, brother, Johnny Davis, many nieces and nephews and their families.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to everyone who has shared kindness, love, and condolences. We are especially grateful for James Owens, Mary and Katherine Adams, Elizabeth Mota, Columbus Hospice, and the staff of Piedmont Columbus Midtown to include Janeigha Jackson, RN, Dr. Arshia Khan and Dr. Deliana Peykova.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Columbus Hospice, in honor of the comfort and assurance that they brought to Kathy and her loved ones in her final hours.
