Joy H. Burnham went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at her residence.

A homegoing celebration will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 2 PM in the chapel at McMullen Funeral Home with Dr. Kevin Calhoun and Reverend Ralph Melton officiating. Interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The following will serve as active pallbearers: Rick Bowers, Kenny Harbuck, Ron Henderson, Art Sheldon, Carl M. Short, and Prue Wilson. Visitation will be Friday, October 2, 2009 from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home.

Joy was born in Columbus, GA on November 4, 1928. She attended public schools in Columbus. Upon graduation from Jordan High School in 1945, she attended Life Bible College in Los Angeles, CA. She is a graduate of the American Institute of Banking, the University of Georgia School of Banking, and the Bank Administration Institute School of Banking at the University of Wisoncsin, where she graduated with honors.

She was on the organizational team of the National Bank of Ft. Benning which opened in July 1957. At the time the National Bank of Ft. Benning merged with the First National of Columbus, she was Executive Vice President and cashier. After retiring from the bank with over 40 years of service, she worked with the city of Columbus as interim director of the Office of Emergency Management. She went on to work for the Federal Emergency Management for ten years, working in the aftermath of hurricanes Andrew and Opal.

She was very active in the local community. She is a former member of the Credit Women's Breakfast Club, and former president of the Soroptimist International Association. She was a member of the Edgewood Senior Center, she was on the City of Columbus Senior and Lawman Committee and served as the treasurer. She was a graduate of the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy. She was a member of the National Church Conference of the Blind. She was a member of the Columbus Foresquare Gospel Church for 62 years.

She was a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church and served as treasurer of the Joyful Servants. She was a member of the mission committee. She has been on two mission trips with her church. In 2007, she was the oldest member to go to Thailand and in 2009, she went to Canada.

Her husband of over 52 years, Gordon C. Burnham, preceded her in death.

She loved volunteer work and was willing to be helpful in many ways. A devoted Christian, she enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. One of the things she loved to do was go on cruises and has been on 39 of them.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dewey and Evelyn Burnham.
