Joseph " Joe" Klaus Newton, 69 of Columbus, Georgia died Monday January 27, 2020 at Piedmont Midtown Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday February 3, 2020 in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. with Father Daniel O'Connell officiating. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery.
Joe was born September 23, 1951 in Nurnberg, Germany to Hildegarde Newton of Columbus, Ga. and the late Arthur James Newton. He was a History graduate of Columbus State University and served in the U.S. Air Force for five years. After serving his country, Joe worked for the United States Postal Service for over twenty years.
Joe was a huge fan of football. The Kentucky Wildcats and the Detroit Lions were two of his favorite teams. While growing up his family was stationed in many places, this allowed him to travel the world which left him with many memories. He and his parents lived in Ethiopia for three years and during that time he found much enjoyment exploring the amazing nature and wildlife. Joe had a special place in his heart for animals. He would rescue cats and dogs to make sure each animal he encountered was given the best of care.
Survivors include his mother Hildegarde Newton of Columbus, Georgia , sister Frances Allen (Greg) of Ellerslie, Georgia and soul mate for over twenty seven years Ruth Weaver of Columbus, Georgia. He is also survived by many extended relatives all from the Texas area.
