Dr. Joseph P. McCarty of Columbus, GA passed from this world to eternity on April 7, 2020. He now rests in Heaven with his Lord and Savior. He is survived by his wife Jimmi of almost 48 years, his six children and 8 grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and one brother.
He loved life. His earlier years were preparation for what he would accomplish in life. He was not afraid of a challenge and faced each with courage and gave his best to his family, friends, patients and coworkers. His gentle spirit and faith was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Dr. McCarty loved his wife, children and grandchildren and was more than a loving husband, father and grandfather to each of them. He devoted his life to caring for others, and loved his life long career choice as a Pediatric Neurologist. Most importantly he loved the Lord and was a faithful servant until the end of his life.
He was born in Arkadelphia, AR October 4, 1950, son of the late Clark and Myrene McCarty. He attended school in Arkadelphia and graduated from Arkadelphia High School and Henderson State College there.
Dr. McCarty was commissioned in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant before starting medical school and served in the military for 21 years, retiring as Lt. Colonel. He graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical School and continued his medical and military career with an internship at William Beaumont Medical Center in El Paso, TX. He then completed residencies in both Pediatrics and Neurology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.
He began his career as a Pediatric Neurologist at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington State. He served a 3 year tour in Germany stationed at 2nd General Hospital Landstuhl, West Germany.
After returning from Germany, Dr. McCarty was stationed again at Madigan Army Medical Center. While serving as Chief of the Neurology services there, he started a Neurology training program.
After retirement from the US Army, he continued practicing as a civilian Pediatric Neurologist for over 26 years in Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia and Pennsylvania. Outside of his Career, he served in many churches, and political endeavors. He enjoyed many hobbies and interests outside of work, as well. Some of them being collecting stamps and elephants, following football, especially the Arkansas Razorbacks, music, gardening, photography, traveling, reading, and continuing to learn throughout his life time.
A Celebration of his Life with Military Honors will be held 3:00 PM Monday, June 22, 2020 at Rose Hill Baptist Church, 2100 Hamilton Road Columbus, GA 31904. Guidelines set forth by the CDC and Governor Brian Kemp to maintain social distancing for those attending the funeral will be in effect. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His strength, courage, wisdom, and passion for life will live on in those who loved him.
