Joseph Gaines Hale, 70, lifelong resident of Columbus, died January 30, 2017, at his home.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Father Luke Wetzel officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mr. Hale was born October 16, 1946 in Columbus, GA son of the late Joseph Flexner Hale and Lucille Knudsen Hale.
He graduated from Columbus High School in 1964 and earned his Business degree from Georgia Southwestern State University. Gaines worked for the State of Georgia. When visiting his grandchildren, he loved going to their soccer and baseball games, school plays and dance events.
Gaines was a history buff and enjoyed visiting battle fields and historic sites. He had fond memories of visiting his cherished aunt, Ellen Knudsen Raftery, in Montana, working at Yellowstone National Park and taking in all that nature had to offer. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Flexner Hale, mother, Lucille Knudsen Hale and sister, Ellen Hale Wade.
Survivors include his sons, Joseph Gaines Hale, Jr. of Columbus, GA and Robert Lindsey Hale, daughter-in-law, Maeve Cummings Hale of Maynard, MA, grandchildren, Owen and Devon Hale of Maynard, MA, ex-wife, Laura French Hale, niece, Caroline Wade Pugh and nephew, Billy Holmes Wade.
