John Cooper Swearingen, Jr., 73, of Columbus, Georgia, died Friday, June 17, 2016 surrounded by his children after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at 3:00 PM at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Reverend Cynthia Cox Garrard officiating according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. The family will greet friends immediately following the service with a reception at St. Luke.

John was born June 8, 1943 at Fort Gordon Army Base in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of the late John Cooper Swearingen, Sr. (Lt. Colonel, Retired) and Constance M. (Lanier) Swearingen.

John lived all over the world as a young man, graduating from Stuttgart High School in Germany, the University of Georgia and Mercer Law School. He was a prominent local defense attorney for over thirty years. He was a loving father, son, husband, brother, and grandfather; a passionate mentor and coach; a friend to many and caring of all.

John was predeceased by his wife Suzanne (Suzi) Norwalk Swearingen, father John Swearingen Sr. and his sister Connie Swearingen Brooks.

He is survived by his mother Connie Swearingen, his children Kerry Swearingen Morrell(Michael), Caroline Swearingen Latham(Chan)and John (Robbie) Robert Swearingen, beloved grandchildren Vaux, Suzanna, Lily and his sister Joanne Swearingen Schuerman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Samaritan Fund, 1104 2nd Avenue, P.O. Box 867, Columbus, Georgia 31902.
