John Wade "Johnny" Johnston, Sr., 84, of Columbus, GA passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016 after a lengthy illness and is now with his Lord and Savior.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, November 25, 2016 at Edgewood Baptist Church 3564 Forrest Rd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. David Howle and Rev. Bill Mayhew officiating. A private interment will be held at Ladonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
He was born on July 20, 1932 in Troy, AL and was the son of the late Chloe Gardner and Robert Houston Johnson. Johnny was always willing to share his testimony about his Lord, as he had experienced many miracles in his lifetime. He has been a member of Edgewood Baptist Church for many years. He has one brother, Dr. William Burton Johnston (Emily) who lives in Richmond, VA. He is preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
He worked for Albert Snipes at the Goo Goo Restaurant while attending school and that was really where he got his start in the restaurant business. Johnny was very successful in the restaurant business and many may remember Johnny's Barbeque, where he first started off and also Johnny's Center Restaurant.
Johnny always had a love for music. Later in life, he served as minister of music for 11 years at Victory Heights Baptist Church in Fortson, GA under the leadership of Rev. Bill Mayhew.
Johnny graduated from Columbus High School in 1951 and was an active member of the Columbus Jaycees for a number of years. He lived in Columbus most of his life and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise "Lou" Stephens Johnston of Pensacola, FL. They raised four children, Beth Thornell (Danny), Wade Johnston, Jr. (Deena), Don Johnston (Theresa) and Doug Johnston (Amy). They have been blessed with 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
