John B. Gaboury, a beloved father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, at the home of his son in Cataula, GA, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 22, 1943, in Detroit, MI, John led a life defined by quiet strength, resilience, and dedication to those he loved.

After retiring from a distinguished career as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, John and his wife, Marty (Martha Gaboury), embarked on a new adventure as co-owners of Gabby’s Café in Duluth, MN. Together, they created a welcoming environment where Marty’s home cooking and John’s engaging stories made the café a cherished spot for locals and visitors alike.

Following the sale of Gabby’s Café, John and Marty moved to Port Charlotte, FL, where John worked as a custodian at Charlotte County High School. Known for his diligent work and friendly nature, John touched the lives of many within the school community.

John’s life was filled with simple joys. His deep affection for his German Shepherd Dogs, who were loyal companions throughout his life, reflected his own loyalty and protective nature. He also had a passion for classic Western TV shows and movies, which resonated with his values of loyalty, honor, and the triumph of good over evil.

Though John was often more of a solitary figure, his family meant everything to him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marty; his stepdaughter, Denise Lowery; his parents, Beatrice and John Gaboury; and his brother, Jack Gaboury. He is survived by his son, Jon E. Gaboury, and daughter-in-law, Dawn Gaboury, along with their children Dakota, Samantha, and Jonathan; his stepchildren, Diane, David, Dawn, Dayna, and Debbie; and 19 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

John passed away surrounded by the love of his family, with his son Jon, grandsons Dakota and Jonathan Gaboury, and daughter Debbie by his side.

For the past three years, John received compassionate care from the professional staff at Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama. The family deeply appreciates their unwavering support and dedication.

A visitation will be held at McMullen Funeral Home on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather to reflect on John’s life and celebrate his memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PAWS Columbus, Georgia, to honor John’s love for animals.

John’s life was one of perseverance, love, and devotion. From his military service to his entrepreneurial ventures and later years in Port Charlotte, FL, John’s legacy is one of dedication to his family and community. As we remember him, we celebrate his life filled with love, laughter, and the simple joys of family.
