Dr. John Winthorp Crim, 88, of Columbus died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M., Monday, January 28, 2013 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1130 1st Ave., Columbus, GA with Rev. Dr. Greg Wilde officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception at the church immediately following the services, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.
Dr. Crim was born November 9, 1924 in Scarsdale, NY son of the late William Doolittle and Margaret Miller Crim. Dr. John Crim was a commissioned officer in the Navy and during that time received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette University, and later served 18 years in the Navy Reserve. He was married to his first wife Jeannie for 47 years. John received a PhD from Georgia State University. He was a Business Professor at Auburn University for 10 years and Columbus State University for 20 years, retiring in 1997 to enjoy traveling with his second wife Frances.
John was a very charismatic man who participated in many performances at the Springer Opera House, and could recite the poem "Casey at the Bat" perfectly! John was known for how he loved to buy less than perfect cars, boats, anything mechanical, and endlessly fix them. He was a member in SAR, active for 40 years in the Kiwanis Club, and a member Trinity Episcopal in Columbus for over 40 years, where he served as a lay reader. A loving father, grandfather, and husband; John had an impact on many lives and will be missed.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jeannie Bersforth Crim, his brother, Shepard B. Crim, and step-son, Bob Carr.
Survivors include his wife, Frances K. Crim; daughters, Lucinda Hill (Bloise) and Martha Wilson (Ray); stepchildren, Nancy Buntin (Jim), Lynn Cantrell (Brian), Kathy McNeil, Scott Porter (Beverly); brother, William D. Crim, Jr.; sister, Margaret Crim Barry (Bob); grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jean, and Macfarland Hill and wife Mallory, Micah, Kara, Diana, Laurel, Jonathan, Stephen, and Thomas Wilson; step-grandchildren, Tish Shirley (Bobby), Jenny Lynn Buntin, Richard Porter (Brandi), Melissa Wolf (Chris), Tristan Porter, Bekka McNeil and step-great grandchildren, Mac and Graham Shirley, Carter and Callie Wolf.
