John Shelby Amos II, 71 of Midland, GA died peacefully Thursday, November 30, 2023 surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Cascade Hills Church with Pastor Brent Purvis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. Scott Ressmeyer and the Miracle Riders will serve as pallbearers, according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA. 31907.

Shelby was born March 4, 1952 in Pensacola, FL to the late John Beverly Amos and Elena Diaz-Verson Amos. He was a member of Cascade Hills Church and was the AFLAC State Manager for both Louisiana, Alabama –West Florida, for a combined time span of over 40 years. He was not only the son of AFLAC Principal Founder John Amos but also a longtime member of the company’s board of directors. He and his wife, Wanda J. Amos, have been an active part of the community, owning the local Columbus Cottonmouth Hockey Team for over 17 years.

Shelby along with his wife Wanda established a foundation that has, and will continue to benefit the following local charities: Columbus Youth Hockey, John B Amos Cancer Center, Elena Amos Breast Care Center, Children’s Miracle Network, Alzheimer’s Association, AFLAC Children Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Hope Harbour Outreach for Battered Women, Girls Inc, Scott Ressmeyer and the Miracle Riders.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years Wanda Jones Amos of Midland, GA, sister, Sita Amos Frith of Upatoi, GA, brother-in-laws, Mark Jones (Cindy) of Columbus, GA, Matthew Jones (Jenny) of Phenix City, AL, Sam Jones of Smiths Station, AL, grandchildren, Shelby Daniell of Phenix City, AL, Mackie Amos of Nashville, TN, Ella Amos of Columbus, GA, Addison Benton of Columbus, GA, Harper Benton of Columbus, GA, Great Grandson, Skye Daniell of Phenix City, AL, cousins, Dan and Kathelen Amos of Columbus, GA, Cecil and Bettye Cheves of Columbus, GA, special friends, Andrew and Whitney Burnett, Mike and Barbara Fincher, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A special thank you for the wonderful care provided by the staff of Spring Harbor, Columbus Hospice, Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Floor 6 Main, the Emergency Room, the Interventional Radiology Department and the John B Amos Cancer Center.
