John Irvin Alford, 79, of Cataula, GA died peacefully with his family by his side at his home Tuesday, January 30, 2024.
A visitation will be held 4:00-6:00PM Sunday, February 4, 2024 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907
John was born July 8, 1944 in Columbus, GA to the late Cleveland Alford and Minnie Estelle Miller Alford. Shortly after high school, John went to work for the Columbus Fire Department and then Tom’s Foods, where he eventually retired after many years as a long-distance driver and was a member of the Two Million Mile Club for safe driving.
John enjoyed traveling for pleasure with a special fondness for towns along Route 66 and visiting national parks. He was also a lover of classic cars, spending much of his free time tinkering under the hood, and attending car club functions including participating in the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour. John was a passionate NASCAR fan, rarely missing a race. He stayed up to date with current world news and enjoyed sharing his opinions of current affairs, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandkids.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Elizabeth, and daughter Catherine “Jo Jo” Thompson.
He is survived by his daughters Jennifer Domonkos (Nandor) and Suzanne Williams (David) as well as five grandchildren: Nickie Thompson, Luke Harvey, Sarah Domonkos, Delia Williams and Norah Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Columbus Hospice.
