First Sergeant (USA Retired) Joan Taylor, 82, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at her home.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Norman Dunlap and Rev. Allison Owen officiating. Interment will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. A Rosary will be said 6:00 PM Monday, May 14, 2018 (73rd Anniversary of the Women's Army Corp) with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

First Sergeant (USA Retired) Taylor was born July 18, 1935 in Chicago, IL daughter of the late Everard and Florence Turner Taylor. In 1954, after graduating high school, she signed up for The Women's Army Corp, retiring after 20 years of service. Upon her retirement, she taught Junior ROTC for 11 years in Russell County, being the first female to do so in the Southeastern Region. For the next 6 years, she would find herself being the Assistant to the Principal for Mt. Olive Elementary in Russell County. Afterwards, for 9 years, she volunteered her time with the Muscogee County Humane Society.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and a niece.

Survivors include her friend of 49 years, Elizabeth Eustice of Columbus, GA, niece and her family, Wendi Orlando (John) of Worth, IL. Great nephew Jay Orlando (Brandi) of Tinley Park, IL and their children, Tyler and Isabella Orlando. A great niece Cori Rowland (Jeff) of New Lenox, IL and their children Morgan and McKenna Rowland. Also, a sister-in-law, Corrine Taylor of Palos Hills, IL. Other survivors include a great niece, Aimee Bartosh, of Schaumburg, IL. A great niece, Kallie Schaap (Jon) of Huntley, IL, and their children, Carter and Jillian Schaap. A niece, Kerri Lyn Garcia (Alvaro) of Austin, TX. Also, her little companion, Meagey, who kept watch over her during her illness.

The family would like to thank all family members and friends, and especially Columbus Hospice and their dedicated and caring staff, whom without we could not have accomplished her transitional days as she desired.

Flowers will be accepted, although memorial contributions to Columbus Hospice 7020 Moon Rd. Columbus, GA 31909 www.columbushospice.com would be preferred, or to your favorite charity.
