Jerry Wayne Schafer, 72 of Columbus died Sunday, December 09, 2018 after a lengthy illness with heart disease and cancer.
A Memorial Service will be held 12:00 Noon Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Columbus Hospice 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, Ga. 31909 according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
Jerry was born December 15, 1945 in Columbus, Ga. to the late Edna E. and Woodrow "Woody" Schafer.
He lived a life filled with many accomplishments. He proudly served his country in the military during the Vietnam era. Upon his return to civilian life, he joined the Columbus Police Department where he made many lifelong friends. He later transferred to the Sherriff's Department in Jonesboro, Georgia. Having served there for many years, he decided to move back to Columbus and pursue a different career path.
Jerry started his new career with the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier and worked his way up to become the Postmaster of Columbus where he served until his retirement. He loved to play golf, fish, watch his beloved Auburn Tigers and tailgate with his many Auburn friends.
Survivors include two sons, Chadwick "Chad" Schafer and Troy Hodges (Lynn), sister Peggy Lambert, niece Kelli Shepherd and her children Layla and Jonathan Shepherd and nephew Steve Lambert as well as many loving cousins, friends and his beloved dog Charlie.
The family would like to thank all Jerry's golf buddies, football tailgating crew and numerous friends and family for their many acts of kindness during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Columbus Hospice House.
