Jane Aliene Prest was known to friends for a strong social conscience and her joy in helping others.
Jane, 72, died at her Overlook home Tuesday of natural causes.
She was born on June 22, 1947, in Morehead City, NC, the daughter of Elizabeth Huntley and Kenneth W. Prest. The family moved to Tampa when Jane was a child.
Jane graduated from Howey Academy, then earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Drexel University in Philadelphia. Later, she earned a master's in business administration from the Simmons College Graduate School of Management in Boston. At Simmons, Jane was a Dean's Scholar and a Judith Abrams Scholar.
Jane was a homemaker who home-schooled two sons through high school. At the same time, she helped start a business, designed a gourmet kitchen, restored and decorated two historic houses, and edited a doctoral dissertation.
"I am not content with mediocrity," Jane once wrote. "I see the big picture, grasp patterns, see new possibilities and different ways of doing things."
Jane's friends remember her social conscience and concerns for others. Most recently, she volunteered weekly at the Muscogee County Friends of Libraries, sorting and pricing books for the Library Store and periodic sales.
She leaves a brother, Kenneth W. Prest Jr., and his wife Ellen; two sons, Jon Dustin Holcomb, his wife Tara and their three children Madeline, Davis and Hyer, and Grayson Holcomb, his wife Donna and their two children James and Marie; a niece, nephew and great nephews.
A brother, James A. Prest II, died in 2008.
The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Hope Harbour, P.O. Box 4182, Columbus, GA 31914, and Muscogee County Friends of Libraries, P.O. Box 5381, Columbus, GA 31906.
