James Russell (Ret.) Wheaton

LTC (Ret.) James Russell Wheaton, Jr., 86, of Columbus, GA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at his home.
Memorial Services will be held 12:30 PM, Monday, September 29, 2014 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in the Main Sanctuary with a Calling held before the service at 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Burial Services with full military honors will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery at 2:30 PM according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
LTC (Ret.) Wheaton was born January 9, 1928 in Poughkeepsie, NY, son of the late Col. (Ret.) James Russell Wheaton, Sr. and Helen Andrews Wheaton. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1950 and served 21 years in the U.S. Army Infantry/ Airborne as a decorated combat commander in Korea and three tours in Vietnam. After retiring from the U.S. Army, he worked for AFLAC and Pratt Whitney. LTC (Ret.) Wheaton was very much interested in World War II history, military weaponry, and trading in old cars.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Dee Ann Aliff Wheaton; his children, James M. Wheaton (Belinda), Michael A. Wheaton (Kim), Elizabeth A. Peckham (Philip), Sallie L. Johnson (Sheldon); brother, LTC (Ret.) Robert L. Wheaton; his grandchildren, Alan Wheaton, Andrew Wheaton, Linda Wheaton, Sallie Peckham Vanhoose, Carol Ann Johnson, Matthew Johnson; one great-grandchild; Dee's children, Anita Jackson (James) and Carmen Cockerham; grandchildren, Kyle Jackson , Shanna Cockerham, and Adam Parish; and two great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Kyle Jackson, Lead, Robert Wheaton, James M. Wheaton, Michael A. Wheaton, Matthew Johnson, Sheldon Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Memorial Fund or the D.A. Turner
