James Thomas Smallwood, Sr., 92, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, April 15, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital.
No services will be held at this time according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
James was born June 16, 1930 in Douglasville, GA to the late Adrian Smallwood and Emna Pearl Layton Smallwood. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years as a Master Sergeant. He served several tours in Vietnam, went to Germany and France. He was a Jet Mechanic for the Air Force and Commercial Air Lines. While working on Jets James created a specific tool which made it easier for him and other mechanics to work on airplanes. His main hobby was wood working and enjoyed making unique crafts for his family and friends. Other than his parents he is preceded in death by his son, James Thomas Smallwood, Jr. sisters, Jean Crigger, Jackie Woodard and Inez Hedges, and brother, Charles Roger Smallwood.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Smallwood of Columbus, GA, daughter, Elizabeth Grizzle (Keith) of Cutler Bay, FL, sister, Mary Joyce Harrell, grandson, Keith Roberts of Ocala, FL, granddaughters, Shannon Ham, (Bob) of Flowery Branch, GA, Lisa Grizzle of Cutler Bay, FL, Heather Grizzle of Cutler Bay, FL and three great-grandchildren.
