James N. Osment, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at his residence.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday June 26, 2024, in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. The family will have a visitation with friends following the service at the funeral home. A private interment will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL.

James was born April 23, 1926 in Opelika, AL and was a resident there for many years. He graduated from Clift High School in 1944. From 1944-1946 he served in the US Navy including 18 months aboard The USS Kudson APD101 in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of war vs. Amphibious Forces and received the Navy and Marine Combat Action Ribbon and numerous other medals.

Mr. Osment attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Massey Business College in 1955. He was employed by RCA Communications and served four years on Cape Canaveral Down Range Missile Stations.  He served as Comm. Center Chief at San Salvador-Dominican Republic and Mayaguez Puerto Rico.  Leaving RCA in 1959 Mr. Osment was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration and retired in 1982 with 23 years of service in Columbus, GA.  Mr. Osment attended the Central Christian Church for many years and a past deacon.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion and The Destroyer Escort Association.  Mr. Osment enjoyed traveling to the Dominican Republic, cruising and growing flowers & having a cigar and a beer every day.  Mostly he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren whom he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by his father: Andrew Jackson Osment, Sr. His mother: Martha William Moore Osment both of Opelika, AL also Brother: Andrew Jackson Osment & wife Margaret.

He is survived by his wife, Mirtha Mercedes Osment whom he met and married in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Nov. 10, 1957,  Children: James A. Osment (Mary Jo), Susan Osment Potter (Tim) and Melanie Osment Jimmerson (Stewart). Grandchildren: Kendall Jimmerson, Neil Jimmerson, Katherine Jimmerson, Ally Potter, and Will Potter. Great Grandchildren: Ryan Watkins, Kylie Jimmerson and Autumn Potter.
