SSG James Albert Nelson, a devoted family man and distinguished retired serviceman, passed away peacefully at his home on March 17, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born on February 7, 1936, and lived a life full of love, adventure, and cherished moments that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
James proudly served his country for 22 years in the Army, completing two tours in Vietnam. His dedication and bravery made him not just a soldier, but a hero to many. After his military service, he found fulfillment as a truck driver with Diversified Products, Interstate Batteries, and Ryder, loving the open road until his very last day. He reveled in the freedom of driving while also sharing tales from the road that brought a smile to everyone’s face.
He was a loving and devoted husband to his late wife, Virginia G Arrington Nelson, with whom he shared an extraordinary bond. James leaves behind his cherished children: Carlene Elizabeth Kemp, Donald F Nelson (Leala), and Tammy L Barnwell. He was exceptionally proud of his grandchildren: John Shane Nelson, Brandon James Nelson (Mallory), Tiffanie A Bullard, Timothy Scott Dodson, Chris J Nelson, Michelle L Nelson, and John Kevin Hughes Jr (Blaine), as well as his dear granddaughter Hailee Elizabeth Barnwell (Austin). With many great-grandchildren and numerous loving family members, his legacy will continue to thrive through them.
Known for his vivacious spirit, James enjoyed making memories each year during the holiday season. His famous pecan pies became a beloved staple at Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings, drawing everyone together to celebrate family traditions. He transformed his yard into a holiday wonderland, beginning each year right after Thanksgiving. Friends and neighbors would come from miles around to admire his Christmas lights and homemade painted scenes, complete with a lifelike Santa.
An outdoorsman at heart, James spent countless hours enjoying nature, whether it was hunting or taking in the peaceful serenity of the world around him alongside his many beloved pets. His love for reading western books and watching old westerns on TV highlighted his passion for storytelling and nostalgia, which resonated with friends and family alike.
James was also known for his community spirit, serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Seale Volunteer Fire Department, exemplifying his commitment to helping others and giving back to the community he loved.
The memory of SSG James Albert Nelson will be celebrated during a Celebration of Life service on March 22, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory in Columbus, GA. His remarkable life will be honored, and those who walk through this journey alongside him are encouraged to share their stories and keep his spirit alive.
While he is dearly missed, James's warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will forever linger in the hearts of his family and friends. They take comfort in knowing that he now rests in a place of peace, and the legacy he built will live on in every shared memory and story.
