LTC (Ret.) James Edwin Miller, 81, of Columbus died Sunday, April 21, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, April 25, 2013 at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 1104 2nd Avenue Columbus, GA 31901 with Rev. Robert Beckham and Rev. Helen Berenthien officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. A private entombment will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.

James Edwin Miller was born January 26, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Henry William and Marie Clark Miller. In 1935 he moved with his parents to Southern California where he spent his childhood and teen years. He attended UCLA and received a commission in 1952 as an Infantry Second Lieutenant in the Army. He was an Army Aviator and his overseas service included Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from active duty in 1973 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and settled in Columbus, Georgia. His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and many others.

He was married to the former Elizabeth Shirley Hollister in 1953 and to this union was born two sons, Paul M. Miller (Susan) of Columbus, Georgia and Clarke C. Miller (Jennifer) of Greenville, South Carolina and two grandsons, Cameron J. Miller of Austin, Texas and Derek J. Miller of Atlanta, Georgia.

The Millers are active members of St. Luke United Methodist Church of Columbus where they both have served in a variety of positions.

In 1948 he joined the first of many Masonic organizations to include DeMolay, York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Sojourners. He received the Degree of Master Mason in 1959 and affiliated with Ft. Benning Lodge No. 579, F. & A.M., of Columbus in 1979 where he served as Worshipful Master. He served through the Grand Lodge Line and was installed as the Most Worshipful Grand Master on October 21, 1998.

After completing his year as Grand Master, he continued his service to the Grand Lodge in a variety of positions. He was instrumental in the formation of West GA Daylight Lodge #760, in Columbus and served as Master.

He was a member of many other appendant bodies which included: Muscogee Conclave, Order of the Red Cross of Constantine, Charter Member of Georgia Council No. 304, AMD, Ft. Benning Chapter No. 278, Order of the Eastern Star, Upper Room Tabernacle No. XLV and the Al Sihah Shrine Temple.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Grand Secretary Georgia Masonic Charities Foundation, 811 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201.
