James Allen McMullen, Sr. 75 of Columbus, Georgia died Sunday, July 26, 2015 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 31, 2015 at Beallwood Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Duncan and Rev. Clark Standard officiating. Interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
James was born July 23, 1940 in Columbus, Georgia to Allen and Eddie Mae McMullen. James started working in Columbus as a young man in his father's business McMullen Garage and Service Station located on Andrews Rd in Columbus, Ga. He attended Rosemont Elementary and was the 1958 Graduate of Jordan Vocational High School. After graduating from high school, James attended Georgia Southwestern College. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Germany.
After returning from Europe in 1961, he began his career in Funeral Service. In 1964, James graduated from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Dallas, TX. He worked locally for many years and in 1987 he and his family opened McMullen Funeral Home located on Gentian Blvd in Columbus. James has served thousands of families in this community over the past 50 years. He was a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes, Georgia Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. Last year, James received his 50- year anniversary pin in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the funeral profession during his career. He always said" that it was a privilege to have served each family with personal service".
James was a member of Beallwood Baptist Church and the Lions Club for over 40 Years. He served in all the chairs of the club. He was named Lion of the Year in 1973, District 18-E Governor of Lions International in 1976, Chairman of the Georgia Sight Conservation Committee, Georgia Lions Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation. He served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Lions Eye Bank, Peach Bowl (now Chick-Fil-A Bowl) and was a certified Eye Enunciator for the Medical College of Georgia. Additionally, James served as Chairman for over 36 years of the Lions Club Washington D.C. Educational Trip. This annual trip has carried over 40,000 5th and 6th grade students from the Chattahoochee Valley Schools Systems.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Cecille McClellan McMullen, two children; Lisa McMullen Allen and her husband Stan, James Allen McMullen, Jr., four grandchildren;
Elle Allen, Mary Mac Allen, Annie Jacob McMullen and Bowden McMullen all of Columbus, Georgia. He is also survived by his brother Edgar A. McMullen and his wife Margaret of Powder Springs, Ga., nephews; Jeff and John McMullen; cousins; Jerry Boutwell and his wife Barbara of Villa Rica, Georgia, Jeanette Ide and her husband Terry of Powder Springs, Georgia, Cathy Jackson and her husband Chris of Molena, Georgia, Phillip Harris and his wife Ivy of Columbus, Georgia and Marti Mote Larkin of Lumberton, Texas.
