James Henry Hiers

James Henry Hiers, 73, of Columbus, GA died Monday, June 26, 2023 at Columbus Hospice House.

A celebration of his life will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, June 30, 2023 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

James was born October 1, 1949 in Thomasville, GA to the late Robert “Poppy” S. Hiers and Marjorie “Bajee” Belle Weller Hiers. James began his career in the US Navy, serving as a Yeoman aboard the submarine the USS Sea Leopard. After his naval career, he became a Respiratory Therapist. He was recruited by the then Columbus College to become a professor of Respiratory Therapy, and during his professorship earned his master’s degree. James was a natural teacher, and his love language was humor. James was a pragmatic creative, focusing his creations on things that aided his family in their everyday tasks. He designed and constructed a Geodesic Dome for his own personal workshop as this structure was the most economical to build and left the smallest environmental impact on its surroundings. James favorite past-time was spending time with his Grandchildren, and his brother, George.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Hiers of Columbus, GA, daughter, Kimberly Colclough (Joseph) of Pasadena, CA, son, Scott Blair Hiers (Jennifer) of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Logan James Hiers of Columbus, GA, Katherine Clara Hiers of Columbus, GA, siblings, Elaine Futch of Columbus, GA, George F. Hiers of Columbus, GA, Sue Ellen Hiers of Durham, NC and Thomas Hiers of Titusville, NC. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his honor to the Columbus Hospice House at 7020 Moon Rd. Columbus, GA 31909.
