James C. Cross, Jr., 77, of Newnan, GA formerly of Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL died Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Piedmont Hospital in Newnan, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 9, 2013 at Evangel Temple Assembly of God with Reverend Watson McKemie officiating. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. Cross was born July 20, 1936 in Phenix City, AL son of the late James C. Cross, Sr., his birth mother who died at birth, Bonnie Lee Willis Cross, and his mother who raised him, Mary Louise Hill Cross. He graduated from Jordan High School, and attended LaGrange College, Mississippi Southern College and Auburn University. He retired from SouthTrust Bank. He was the former choir director at Epworth UMC in Columbus, GA and Summerville UMC in Phenix City, AL. Mr. Cross was a lifelong member of Evangel Temple, one of the founding members of the Bob Barr Band where he received the Gene Kelly Award for his outstanding performance, dedication, and loyalty and was a member of Sertoma International and the Cavaliers Band.

He was an avid golfer and he loved building homes.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Wayne Cross.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Chapman Seals of Newnan, GA, daughter, Leslie Cross (Dr. David) Suarez and their children, Samuel Grayson, Katharine Sydney and Thomas Chapman of Athens, GA, son, James Bradley (Elisa) Cross and their children, James Bradley, Jr. and John Brooks of Smiths, AL, son, John Kevin Cross of Columbus, GA and son, David Allen Cross and his daughter, Mia Marie of Pine Mountain Valley, GA, and his sister, Sandra Talbot (Raymond) Hammock of Columbus, GA.

Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to their favorite charity.
