James Newman Cantrell, 81, of Columbus, GA died Friday, April 1, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, April 4, 2016 at Solid Rock Assembly of God with Dr. Jay Bailey officiating. Entombment will be held at the Masonic Mausoleum at Parkhill Cemetery with Masonic Rites and Military Honors. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Cantrell was born July 22, 1934 in LaGrange, GA son of the late Elonza and Bessie Shaw Cantrell. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He owned Action Buildings and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He was a member of the Muscogee Lions Club and was Past President of Columbus-Ft. Benning Shrine Club. Mr. Cantrell was also the Past Master of the Rose Hill Masonic Lodge #184. He was the Past President of the Independent Car Dealers Association and was Past Member of the Breakfast Exchange Club. Mr. Cantrell was 33 Degree Mason and a member of York Rite College. He was a 50-year Mason and Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Eastern Star and Rose Croix.
Mr. Cantrell was the 3rd District Chairman of the Democrat Executive Committee, and along with his wife, they founded the Columbus St. Jude Radiothon. They also founded the "Save the Warm Springs Hospital" committee and was the Chairman. He was also the chairman of J.N.C. Enterprise.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Angus, Earl, Virgil, John and Becky.
Survivors include his loving wife, Imogene "Jean" Wright Cantrell of Columbus, GA, sons, Spencer Cantrell (Carol), Rick Cantrell (Angela), Mark Cantrell (Bonita) and Mac Cantrell (Kim) all of Columbus, GA, sisters, Audrey Lynch of Pell City, AL and Ester Petty (Caryle) of Palm Bay, FL, brothers, Phillip Cantrell and Joseph Cantrell both of Columbus, GA, six grandchildren, Adam (Lee), Brandon (Cathy), Spencer, Jr., Alec, Jeanita, Emily, Louie (Tracy) and Sean, and 2 great grandchildren, Faith and Hope, two brothers-in-law, Mickey Wright (Helen) and Terry Wright (Kaye) and extended family, Tom Giles.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to The Scottish Rite - Valley of Columbus 1027 2nd Ave. Columbus, GA 31901.
