1 SG John Barry Wood, US ARMY (Ret.), 56, died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Midtown Medical Center.
Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM, Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Chapel at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Wood was born on September 19, 1957 in Chico, CA, son of the late John Francis Wood and Evelyn Gertrude Wood of Chico, CA. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army with six years in Korea. He was selected Drill Sergeant of the year in 1982 and was a Ranger Instructor. Following his retirement from the army, he worked in the press room at the Ledger-Enquirer. He was also an umpire for the American Little League and will be fondly remembered as "the ball man".
Survivors include his mother, Evelyn Gertrude Wood of Chico, CA; daughter, Carley Wood Thigpen (Ben) of Columbus, GA; sister, Jennifer Bright of Brunswick, GA; brother, Todd Wood of Palo Cedro, CA; grandchildren, Evie Thigpen, John Maddox Thigpen and Rosemary Thigpen all of Columbus, GA and several nieces and nephews.
