Hilde Geer

Mrs. Hilde Geer, 90, of Columbus, Georgia passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 30, 2023.

No services to be held at this time to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Hilde was born on April 25, 1933 in Simmern, Germany. She was 12 years old when World War II ended and often commented that she could hear the American Bombers flying overhead on the way to their targets. It was in Post War Germany that she fell in love with the American way of life often enjoying Life Savers and Chocolate passed out by American Soldiers. Eventually, she began to work supporting American families at Hahn Air Force Base near Lautzenhausen, Germany. It was here that she met and married USAF Airman James Geer in December 1955. In February 1956, they made the move to Hilde's adopted country, the United States of America. That same month, Jim and Hilde were once again married in front of Jim's family in Ohio. To aid her in learning to speak and understand English, she dutifully watched the Billy Graham Crusades weekly. It was during this time that she learned the American culture. In 1962 she became a U.S. Citizen and earned an Associate's Degree from Columbus Technical College in May 1982.

Hilde and Jim Geer were blessed with three children whom Hilde loved dearly and would often spend hours on the phone reminiscing about their childhoods. Hilde is preceded in death by her husband, James Geer; her father, Josef Rossell; her mother Marie Rossell; and her sister Maria Schmittinger.

She is survived by Charles"Chuckie" Geer (Teri) of Columbus, GA; Maria "Mimi" Hawk (Robin) of Wasilla, AK; and Heidi "Lou" Hofstad (Paul) of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Once you got past the tough German exterior of Hilde Geer, you found an incredibly kind and loving heart who only wanted the best for her kids. We will miss you O-Mama and will see you again in heaven with O-Papa, Rex, Rambo and Chiefy.
