Henry Lewis Greer, 82, of Columbus, GA passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 9, 2011 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Paul Coats officiating. A private interment will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. Greer was born September 19, 1928 in Columbus, GA son of the late Jesse William Greer and Callie Simmons Greer. He was a 1946 graduate of Jordan Vocational High School, where he was one of two standout pitchers on the baseball team his senior year. He earned an associate degree from Young Harris Junior College, where he was active in numerous clubs and committees, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Economics) from Auburn University.

Mr. Greer was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War- era, during which he served as an anti-aircraft artillerist, radio operator and chemical/biological/radiological warfare specialist with the Headquarters Detachment, 1st Composite Group, based out of Ft. Bliss, Texas. He participated in the Tumbler Snapper series of atomic blast tests in Nevada in 1952.

For nearly three decades, Mr. Greer worked in various management positions in the wholesale and retail tire industry in Columbus and he retired as the proprietor of Greer Furniture Refinishing in 2005. He was an active member of Edgewood Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Greer was preceded in death by two brothers, Pvt. Jesse W. Greer, Jr., Company F, 290th Infantry (World War II) and Perry E. Greer.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty McClellan Greer of Columbus, GA, two sons, Russell L. Greer (Karen) of Woodstock, GA and Jeffrey W. Greer of Columbus, GA. He is also survived by two brothers, Raymond D. Greer (Mary Anne) of Columbus, GA and Douglas D. Greer of Columbus, GA, sister, Loette Morgan (Joseph) of Headland, AL. He leaves behind grandchildren, Jeffrey L. Greer of LaGrange, GA, Emily A. Greer of Columbus, GA, Melissa L. Freeman and Katlyn L. Freeman of Woodstock, GA, Julie A. Hassinger of Enid, OK, and Sgt. Gregory A. Whary, Jr. of Lewistown, PA, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
