Hazel Miller Judah, 69, of Columbus, GA died Friday, April 3, 2015 at her home.
Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, April 6, 2015 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd, Columbus, GA 31907, with the Rev. Gary Kemp officiating. The family will receive guests following the service.
Ms. Judah was born April 9, 1945 in Enterprise, AL. Daughter of the late Wyonia King Miller and Ervin C. (Buddy) Miller. Ms. Judah was injured in a diving accident at the age of 17 in 1962 that defined her life but did not stop her from pursuing her dreams.
She was a graduate of Jordan Vocational High School and Columbus College. She was employed by the Columbus Consolidated Government as the Director of the Mayor's Committee for the Handicapped. She retired from Civil Service at Ft. Benning, GA and taught independent living skills for the disabled at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. Ms. Judah graduated from Famous Artist School of West Port, CT and was featured as a solo artist in several local art shows. Ms. Judah was named the first Ms. Wheelchair Georgia in 1984 and was a runner up for Ms. Wheelchair America in 1984. While she was director of the Mayor's Committee for the Handicapped, she established the Dial- A- Ride program which assist persons with disabilities with transportation.
Survivors include her daughter, Daune Renee Judah of Columbus, GA; longtime companion (36 years) Mickey Burt, also from Columbus, GA; sisters, Barbara Moore (Ken) of Ellerslie, GA, Jan Haskell of Destin, FL; four nephews, five grand nieces and two grand nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Roosevelt Warm Springs Development Fund, P.O. Box 1050, Warm Springs, GA 31811.
