Gilbert Ray Deppe, 81 of Columbus Georgia, passed away on January 31, 2021.
A Celebration of Life Service in Columbus Georgia will be held 6:30 PM Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Northside Christian Church, 9801 Whitesville Road Fortson, Georgia 31808. There will be a graveside service at Vernon Cemetery, Vernon, Indiana Thursday June 3, 2021 at 10:00 AM. Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we encourage everyone to make the best decisions to remain safe. If anyone wishes to attend the funeral service, please remember to remain 6 feet apart from those not in your household and wear personal protective equipment.
Born on April 19, 1939 in Vernon Indiana to Benjamin and Evelyn Deppe, Gilbert graduated high school and went to work for Cosco in Seymour Indiana for 37 years. Gib, as his friends call him, was a member of the Jennings Church of Christ in North Vernon before retiring to Columbus, Georgia to be near his daughter. Gib attended Northside Christian Church and was an avid wood worker and jewelry maker. In his later years, he was known for providing enough jewelry for hundreds of shoeboxes for Jennings Church of Christ in North Vernon and Calvary Church in Columbus Georgia. He would keep lapel crosses in his pocket and pass them out to people he met as he went about his daily routine.
Gib is predeceased by wife Roberta Deppe, parents Benjamin and Evelyn Deppe, sisters JoAnn Martin and Patty Mace.
Gib is survived by his daughter Tami Mathis, spouse David Mathis of Columbus Georgia. Grandchildren Danah Greenlee, spouse Kinesha of Holloman Air Force Base, Brandon Carver, Katie Theoret of Columbus Georgia, great-grandchild, Khale Crowningshield of West Chazy, New York. Siblings, Lou Lynn of Indianapolis Indiana and Janet Jones of Bluffton, Indiana.
